Fun on the farm for The Olive School pupils

Our Reception and Year 1 pupils made some new furry friends on a recent trip to Smithills Open Farm.

The four, five and six year old pupils had a fantastic day in the company of the Bolton farm’s goats, sheep, donkeys and alpacas. Children loved having the chance to handle fluffy chicks and to bottle feed some four week old lambs. And teaching staff got up close and personal with a 12 foot python!

After learning about how farm animals are cared for, the children were treated to donkey rides and a trip out on a tractor.

Our Principal Dawn Forshaw said, “The children loved meeting all the animals and were excited by the many opportunities they had to hold and feed them.

A key focus of the Primary Science curriculum is for children to experience and observe phenomena, looking more closely at the natural world. This trip really encouraged our young scientists to be curious and to ask lots of questions.

The staff at Smithills Open Farm were fantastic and handled all our questions, and indeed the entire visit, with enthusiasm and professionalism.”

Etana from Year 1 took a liking to the alpacas. “Look at the alpacas – they have a fringe just like mine!” she exclaimed on seeing them in their paddock.

And Reception pupil Rushida enjoyed holding animals for the first time: “They felt soft and tickly on my hand!”
